Podcast 45 - Gay Stuff (and cheese)

September 29, 2015

This week, Dave was off in the America doing a business travel, or gentrifying Portland or something. We're not quite sure. Apparently there were food trucks. This left Lucy and Roger to go feral in the best way they know: by eating an enormous fancy cheeseboard and talking about queer comics.

We delve into the origins of lesbian & gay cartooning, eat a "cute brie", pontificate on structural inequalities, and feed Rogger his first Cheesestring.

That part ain't pretty, but the rest is comics.

Books we covered:

  • #WicDiv - Team Tumblr
  • Injection - Warren Ellis, Declan Shalvey, Jordie Bellaire
  • Oh Joy Sex Toy  - Erica Moen and many delightful guest artists
  • The Ditch - Kristian Carstensen
  • Space Dumplins - Craig Thompson
  • Wendel - Howard Cruse
  • Stuck Rubber Baby - Howard Cruse
  • Dykes To Watch Out For - Alison Bechdel
  • This One Summer - Jillian Tamaki, Mariko Tamaki
  • Skim - Jillian Tamaki, Mariko Tamaki
  • No Straight Lines (anthology) - ed: Justin Hall In particular, excerpts from:
    • Poppers - Jerry Mills
    • Child Labor - Mary Wings
    • Cy Ross and the SQ Syndrome - Burton Clarke
    • The Tortoise and The Scorpion - Carl Vaughn Frick
    • I Know You Are But What Am I - Robert Triptow
    • The Mostly Unfabulous Social Life of Ethan Green - Eric Orner
    • Sexile - Jamie Cortez
    • Instruction - Robert Kirby & D. Travers Scott
    • Side By Side - Mioki (basically porn, hey - we don't always warn you...)
    • Kyle's B&B - Greg Fox
    • Seven Miles A Second - David Wojnarowicz, James Romberger, Marguerite Van Cook
    • Honor Girl - Maggie Thrash

There's a PDF preview of the first few pages of No Straight Lines here

Cheeses we ate:

  • Neufchatel
  • Taleggio
  • Sussex Slipcote (so good)
  • Chevre
  • Cheesestrings

The podcast wine today was an unremarkable Chinon.

We also asked for queer webcomic recommendations.

So why not do that in the comments, if you're a generally kind sort.

ConSequential Podcast 34 - Smut! (Porn)

Podcast Episode 34: Smut

March 2, 2015

Or pornographic comics, if you're nasty. We take a broad overview of smutty books, try not to say anything too awful about Sonic The Hedgehog fan art, and rate various pornoglyphs on "wankability". Or Roger does. He's very forward. Goes without saying that there are some bad swears in this one.

We read (in case you're slow, just don't click these at work):

  • Starfighter - Hamletmachine
  • Sensitive Pornograph - Ashika Sakura
  • Smut Peddler - Various
  • The Wicked and the Divine - Kieron Gillen, Jamie McKelvie, Matt Wilson
  • Resident Alien - Peter Hogan and Steve Parkhouse
  • Valentines/Fawn - Jess Fink
  • Chester 5000 XYV - Jess Fink
  • Oh Joy Sex Toy - Erika Moen
  • Co-Eds, Snow Sluts - “Man”
  • Sing No Evil - JP Ahonen and KP Alare
  • Hawkeye - Matt Fraction and David Aja

We also ate a lot of Starburst, and retained our youthful appearance by never referring to them as Opal Fruits.

Dave's been in The Canada, attending TCAF, so we talk about comics and comics shows and Canada. We also talk quite a lot about everything that is wrong with society, and some things that are wrong with Star Trek.

  • Beautiful Darkness: Fabien Vehlmann and Kerascoët
  • Hip Hop Family Tree: Ed Piskor
  • The Undertaking of Lily Chen: Danica Novgorodoff
  • Andre The Giant - Life and Legend: Box Brown
  • Celeste: I.N.J. Culbard
  • Pregnant Butch: A.K. Summers (and here's Roger's review / critique)
  • The Spectral Engine: Ray Fawkes
  • Trees: Warren Ellis and Jason Howard
  • The Strumpet: Various
  • Silly Kingdom: Katie Shanahan and Steven Shanahan (and their podcast which I cannot pronounce, but is very good, Shanahanigans).

We also mentioned Lucy Bellwood's Oh Joy Sex Toy strip, and the Kickstarter for the book of the first year's strips - get on that.

Episode 3 Comics For New Readers

Podcast Episode 3: What Comics Should You Give New Readers?

July 9, 2013

This week we decide what the best books to introduce newcomers to comics. Handy stuff! Don’t worry though, because there’s petulance and swearing aplenty. And quite a lot of talk about OhJoySexToy.com. That bit's a little vile, so maybe jump forward a bit from about 20 minutes in if you're a delicate sort. Smelling salts in hand, we press on.

A quick reminder: if you like our theme music, electronic music, or supporting good causes the Music By Programmers album has more tracks from the composer of our theme, Chris Whitworth. And it's for charidee.

Mentioned in this week’s show:

  • Fatale Volume 3
  • Saga Volume 2
  • Prophet Volume 2
  • Naming Monsters
  • The Suitcase
  • Young Avengers
  • Hawkeye Issue 11
  • Satellite Sam
  • Batman ’66
  • Chloe Noonan Monster Hunter
  • Eustace
  • E-merl hypercomics
  • Basically anything by Giannis Milongiannis
